June 2011

Dear Breakthrough Students, Families and Supporters,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure at the end of August, from Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano to pursue my master’s degree in education. After five years and six summers, I seek a deeper learning in the field of education and the opportunity to teach again in the classroom. It has been my privilege to learn, teach and grow in this community and to build a strong and vibrant Breakthrough program here...

St. Margaret’s Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano Leadership Change

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jesús Montoya as the new Director of Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano effective September 1, 2011. Currently serving as an Academic Advisor and Advanced Placement Coordinator at San Juan Hills High School, Mr. Montoya is very much a part of the San Juan Capistrano community and highly familiar with many of our Breakthrough students and families. With a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Irvine and a Master of Education from the University of Southern California in school

counseling, Jesus has made a profound mark both locally and throughout Southern California through his deep commitment to young people and his extraordinarily generous volunteer spirit.

From the desk of High School Coordinator, Megan Moilanen:

This Thursday at 1:30 p.m., approximately half of the College Bound students will be bussed over to a local high school (Capo Valley) to join other students from across the school district in taking a rigorous Algebra test. This test will determine our student’s eligibility for Geometry as a Freshman. The statistics are staggering, students who enter Geometry as Freshman are on the path to taking Calculus by graduation. Students who take Calculus are almost guaranteed to graduate from college.

Today, CB students stayed after school to take a mock test. They exited the testing room looking exhausted but confident in their abilities.

Under the leadership of San Juan Hills math teacher, Cat Nolan (Coach Cat!), Algebra Camp at Breakthrough has been transformed into a fun-filled and successful class. Coach Cat’s enthusiasm and high expectations for her students in contagious. She really knows how to instill confidence and how to “break down” the material.

Please join me in congratulating the students on their culmination of a rigorous summer of Algebra Camp and College Bound. At Thursday’s lunch, I would love to spontaneously have a standing ovation for the students who participated along with some well- deserved high fives and handshakes. The students will be leaving directly after lunch to take the test.

The list of students who will be taking the test includes:

Mario Benitez

Alexis Morales

Diana Ortega

Dayana Pineda

Jose Rodriguez

Betsy Serrano

Fabian Tovar

 Lauren Hurtado

Gaby Gonzalez

Yari Rojas
